David Carl Grantland
On December 15, 2010, we lost David Carl Grantland, a cherished son, husband, brother and friend.
David was born on April 2, 1980, in Medford, Oregon. He graduated from Phoenix High School, where he was a varsity soccer player for four years, making it to the State Championship his sophomore year. He was always very active socially and is remembered for his ability to make us laugh with his quick wit. David had a contagious energy and a true love of life. At an early age, his parents introduced him and his brothers to the outdoors through their numerous camping, skiing and rafting trips. This led to his adventurous nature and love of extreme sports. David was a renowned rafter and kayaker, who appeared in kayak films and magazines. One video captures him launching off a 50 foot waterfall in Argentina.
David's fun-loving personality shined through when he worked with children, he was always looking out for the underdog. He was a teacher, a leader, a hero, a friend.
Beginning David's junior year in high school, and continuing through this past summer, he spent the summers guiding youth groups down the Klamath River. This, of course, required him to change his river name from Crazy Davy to Safety Davy. David's enormous heart and desire to make the world better led him to a Christian orphanage near Tecate, Mexico where he worked with severely disabled children.
David began college on the coast, where he played soccer at college level. He received his bachelor of art's degree from Southern Oregon University. David went on to receive his master's degree in teaching. This enabled him to continue to do what he loved, work with children. After obtaining his teaching degree, David spent two years as a classroom teacher at Hoover Elementary. He once commented that he couldn't believe he was being paid to sing Christmas carols with his students.
On August 2, 2008, he married his high school sweetheart Lindi Pedersen. They fulfilled many of their life dreams together as husband and wife.
David is survived by his wife, Lindi Grantland; his parents, Jim and Vickie Grantland; his brothers, James Grantland III, Branden (Julie) Buel; and his beloved cat, Fergie. He was loved dearly by his surviving Grandmother Janis (Bert) Mehling; Uncle Randy Shaw; and Aunts Sue (John) Kline and Jerri Grantland.
