Donald Glen Skinner

Donald Glen Skinner, 84, passed Saturday, January 27, 2018 with his son and daughter by his side. He born July 3, 1933 in Rifle, Colorado.
His parents moved to Oregon when he was very young and he subsequently received his diploma from Drain High School. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1950 and served on a buoy tender on the East Coast. After a tour in the Coast Guard, he returned to Oregon before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He became an air traffic controller and held a number of positions over approximately 20 years. During his first assignment in Japan, he met Patricia Skinner (formerly Nobuko Saito) and they married in 1958. He was then assigned air traffic control duties in California (Hamilton AFB), Germany (Berlin), South Dakota (Ellsworth AFB), Thailand (Udorn RTAFB), Japan (Misawa AFB and Yokota AFB), and then in New York (Griffiss AFB). During these travels, he and Pat added three children to their family. Upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1974, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in which the citation recognized "a distinguished career in the service of his country". Following his retirement, he returned with the family to Medford where he owned a real estate business. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Non Commissioned Officers Association. He also volunteered to help homeless and disadvantaged veterans and arrange transportation for veterans to receive medications from a military hospital. He actively participated in the renovation of Veterans Memorial Park in South Medford. Don enjoyed fishing, stamp collecting, crosswords, woodworking, bowling with friends, and watching westerns.
He is survived by a son, Chris Skinner of Los Angeles, California; a daughter, Lisa Skinner of Medford, Oregon; a sister, Donna Moore of Watsonville, California; and nieces and nephews in both the US and Japan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; a son, Dan Skinner; and his parents.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford. Condolences and remembrances may be shared with the family through this online guestbook.
