Gaylord Eugene DeVaul, 83, of Ashland, Ore., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. He will be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, husband, son, uncle, friend and fiercely loyal protector of those he loved. He never let a day go by without letting us know how much he loved us.
Gaylord was born June 23, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the only child of Helen Lovey Broussard and Thomas Eugene DeVaul. He served his country with honor and distinction in World War II and The Korean War as a medic, receiving the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and many other commendations for valor.
Gaylord touched many lives with his gentleness and compassion as a teacher. He retired from Jackson Elementary School in Medford, Ore., after teaching for 30 years. He loved writing, reading, poetry, and music. He loved gentle rains, billowy clouds that shadow Ashland's rolling hills, and the ocean. He always rooted for the underdog. He had a beautiful singing voice and shared his personal world through his poems.
Gaylord is survived by Ramona DeVaul, his forever friend; children, John DeVaul, Andria (Thomas) DeVaul Goss, Michele DeVaul; grandchildren, Nichole DeVaul, Rowan Goss, Maura Goss, Alex Ping-An Goss; and stepfather, Howard Nelson. We will always love you. A family memorial will be held at a later date.
