OBITUARY
Horace Nelson Alcorn, age 93 years, passed into eternity with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. He was born Sept. 6, 1926 in rural Dallas, Texas to parents Ernest Nelson Alcorn & Lela M. Akins. Horace is one of 9 children. He married Mary Lucille (Anderson) on December 12th, 1947 in Alturas, California. After marriage they settled in the Kamath Falls, Oregon/Tulelake, California areas. In 2019 they were married 72 years.
He was a truck driver from the age of 15 hauling potatoes for his brother in Tulelake, California. Horace missed his family when on the road so he went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad Lines for 8 years. In 1963 Horace moved his family to Central Point, Oregon when a friend returned a favor offering him the senior driver position for Dellah Timber which ultimately was purchased by Timber Products of Medford. He drove for them for 18 years. His goal in life was to own and operate his own trucking business. In 1984 Horace purchased his first Freightliner truck and went into business for himself. He leased out to Interstate Trucking in Washington State and named his business H & M Trucking.
During his driving career Horace was presented various awards; A pin each year for 15 years from the National Safety Council for safe driving, the "Million-Mile Mack Award" which signified that he drove a Mack Truck a million miles in his career, and he also had the honor of representing Interstate Trucking by pulling their beautiful "Safety Trailer". He could park an 18-wheeler on a dime, and give you change.
Horace and Mary were active members of Southern Baptist Churches wherever they lived. There was no better place he loved to be than in church with his family. He held many different positions within the church body serving the Lord with all his heart. Horace's interests included: Bird hunting, and hot cars/motorcycles.
During Horace's life he had several nicknames: Hoss, Luke, Papa, & Papa-Truck. He loved them all. Horace was an exemplary son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Here was a man who was on the road much of his life, yet managed to maintain a wonderful marriage, find time to be with his children, and make sure they were raised in admonition of the Lord. Horace loved a good prank, always seemed to have a smile on his face, and a positive attitude. His work ethic was to be admired & emulated. He was small in stature, but mighty in character.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Mary, include: Daughter Judi Alcorn Walch(Ron) Lake Creek, Oregon, and Son Jim Alcorn (fiancé Diana) of Central Point, Oregon, 4-Grandchildren: Aimee Walch Kuhlman (Jason), Jeff Alcorn, Chris Alcorn, and Kelli Shaffar (Ryan), and 6- Great-Grandchildren: Levi Kuhlman, Olivia Kuhlman, Brooklyn Alcorn, Brandy Alcorn, Elianna Shaffar, and Jamison Shaffar.
