Joe Leland Strickling

April 26, 1931 — October 5, 2017

On October 5, 2017, Joe Leland Strickling, a brother, a father, and a grandfather, peacefully
passed from this world to the next. He was 86.
Joe was born April 26, 1931, in Roseburg, Oregon. He spent the first thirty-one years of his life
in the Roseburg area. His family consisted of his father, Homer Leland; his mother, Helen
Louise; his younger brother, Ronald Dale; and a younger sister, Linda Louise.
At Roseburg High School Joe met Betty Stidham, of Melrose, in a typing class. He was a junior
and she was a senior. They became a couple and were married May 26, 1950. Their marriage
lasted for over 58 years, until Betty's passing in December 2008. From that marriage came six
children: Michael, Joanna, Patrick, Peggy, Mary, and Gregory.
Until 1963, Joe had supported his family working for Pacific Fruit, Langendorf Bread, and
Sunshine Biscuit Co. But when he was in his early thirties he finally found the work he truly
wanted: Oregon State Police game officer. In 1964 he began his new career in Gilchrist,
Oregon. He was then transferred in 1972 to Medford, where he retired in 1992.
In his retirement Joe enjoyed fishing coastal rivers and local lakes in his boat, playing golf, and
gardening. He also kept up on current events by watching TV news and reading newspapers.
A few years after Betty's passing Joe was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. By 2017, he had lived
about 45 years at his home in Central Point. But his declining health necessitated he be taken
care of at Fern Garden Memory Care in Medford the last few months, where he finally passed.
Joe is survived by his sister, Linda Radford of Roseburg; Michael and Beth Strickling of Albany;
Joanna and Tom Lowe of Stayton; Patrick and Laura Strickling of Pikesville, MD; Peggy
Strickling of Eugene; Mary and Dave Hodges of Pleasant Grove, UT; and Gregory and Jennifer
Strickling of Medford. He also has twenty-one grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. Joe
was preceded in death by two grandsons, Joseph Strickling and Devon Hodges.
Graveside services for Joe will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Both Joe and Betty will be laid to rest in Memory Gardens Memorial Park
