John Allan Lockheed

December 17, 1956 - April 24, 2017

John Allan Lockheed passed away in an automobile accident a few miles from his mountain home near Ashland on the rainy afternoon of Monday, April 24, 2017.

John was born December 17, 1956 in Glendale California to John Allan Lockheed Sr. and Patricia Lockheed. He was proud of his birthday - the date the Wright brothers first flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903.

John grew up in southern California where he graduated from Desert Sun School in Idyllwild. He played bass guitar in a rock band that toured throughout the west and midwest, writing many of the songs played by Jam Central.

John also pursued his love for science and engineering with studies at Cal Poly and at Southern Oregon University where he completed a B.S. in physics. He married Jennifer Baum in 1979. They had two sons, John Arthur and James Marten.

John applied his education as an engineer, notably working on the Hubble Space Telescope for Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, Calif. in the 1980s. He went on to work in various engineering positions and as a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor, and eventually as a high school math and science teacher.

The grandson of aviation pioneer, Allan Haines Lockheed (founder of the Lockheed Aircraft Company, 1926), John was a lifelong enthusiast of all things aerospace. He soloed in a glider at age 14 while his father and family friend, Jack Northrop watched proudly from below. John went on to obtain his private pilot's license and commercial ratings as well as certified flight instructor ratings. He flew his own Cessna 310 and rebuilt a 1974 Cessna Aerobat like new. John enjoyed building large-scale airplane models and would in his later years say he was living vicariously through his sons' aviation pursuits.

John's love for animals; computer science; and music, song writing, and recording were well-known and appreciated among his friends and family. He leaves behind his two sons, John Lockheed of Colorado Springs and Jim Lockheed of Portland; his brother, Scott Lockheed of Ashland; his sister, Marlaine Lockheed, of Princeton, New Jersey; and nieces and nephew, Ananda, Khalida, and Graham. A private memorial has been held.
