Newt Likely passed away April 3, 2011. He was born February 26, 1924 in Bakersfield, California. In 1972, he married Marge Schoof. "We shall meet again my dear".
After high school, he joined the Marines. He went to college in California where he studied Aeronautical engineering. During his life he had many careers; a pilot for Douglas Aircraft Company, a construction contractor, an engineer in the plastics industry, and finally an engineer for Ford Motor Company, where he retired. Once "retired" he and Marge moved to Oregon, where Newt owned and operated a sawmill. Here he milled all the lumber for his and Marge's home in Jacksonville. Newt taught machine shop at Rogue Community College and the Medford School District for several years. He also enjoyed writing and published a book as well as many short stories.
He had a good life - he did it all. His backhoe was an extension of himself. Marge's engagement ring was the backhoe and their dump truck was a gift on their first anniversary.
He is survived by Marge, his wife of 39 years, two daughters, Kay and Judy, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Five older sisters preceded him in death.
Newt loved to feed and watch the birds and squirrels from his spot on the "dead cow", his favorite couch. He out lived two Dalmations who were his great companions. If you would like to do something in Newt's honor, donations may be made to the Jackson County Humane Society. Or plant an tree in his memory.
As Newt was so fond of saying, "See you around the pool room".
