Peter Joseph Cislo, 75 was born March 29, 1944 in Butte, Montana. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on May 19, 2019. Pete bravely and graciously battled Parkinson’s disease for several years. Pete loved people, always advocating for the underdog, the marginalized, and held a fierce sense of love for his family and community.
Throughout his life, Pete forged countless connections between people; strangers to him, who he made friends. From uniting couples as a minister of the Universal Life Church, to teaching at Crater High School and counseling hundreds if not thousands of students (and parents) over 17 years at Ashland High School, to creating Building Hope, a community-driven resource for families suffering foreclosure during the 2008 housing crisis, he established himself as a bedrock member of the community. In 1993, Pete started Leave Your Mark commemorative pavers and landscape supply. As a craftsman who enjoyed woodworking his entire adult life and understood the value of working with one’s hands and the profound benefits enjoyed doing creative work, he made it integral to his business model to assist and empower his customers to take part in the design process and implementation of their dreams.
Pete was a member of Rotary Club, and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He was also a member of the Southern Oregon Homebuilders Association and served as president in 2012. In 2017, Pete and his wife, Deborah ran the Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon support group at the Smullin Health Education Center in Medford, Oregon. Pete was the fourth member to join the Rock Steady Parkinson’s Boxing Classes held at Higs Gym in Central Point, Oregon. Over the past three years, their numbers have grown to over 30 boxers.
Pete is survived by his one true love of 41 years, Deborah Cislo of Medford; his sister Lenore Shively of Sonora, California, his brother Leonard Cislo of Butte, Montana; his sons Eric Cislo, of Jacksonville, and Braxton Reed, of Ashland; his daughters Richelle Miller of Washougal, Washington, and Rozmond Hale, of Anaheim Hills, California. His pride and legacy is carried on with his grandsons Henry, Liam, and Julien Cislo; Perry, Austin, and Riley Miller; Grant Hale, and Granddaughter, Paisley Hale. Pete was fortunate to welcome his great-grandchildren, Fox Octavius Cislo and Kaitlyn Ruth Miller into his large family this past Winter.
Pete left a profound mark on the world. He was loved by many, and will be missed by all.
