Phillip Forrest Holt

Phillip Forrest Holt, 90, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Grants Pass, Ore. He was born in Bemidji, Minn. April 26, 1923 to Knute and Elsie (Branham) Holt.

During World War II he served in the Philippines as an army sharpshooter. He earned medals for his distinguished service and excellence with the M1 Rifle.

He met Freddie L. Forsythe in Baltimore, Md. They were married in Portland, Ore. September 26, 1946.

Phill was always a hard worker and had many jobs and businesses throughout his life. He started with being a logger in the 1940s in Vernonia, Ore., owning Holt's Service and Repair in the 1950s in Tyghe Valley, Ore., later moving the family and business to Medford, Ore. in 1949. He then owned and operated Rotary Drilling Company and Siskiyou Pump Service in the 60s and 70s. Siskiyou Pump Service is now owned by his son, Scott.

Phill enjoyed horseback riding and was a long time member of the Jackson County Mounted Sheriff's Posse. In 1976 Phill had the honor of being one of the select few to participate in the historical reenactment of the Applegate Bicentennial Wagon Train, starting in Keno, Ore. and ending in Jacksonville, Ore. He served as head scout for the six covered wagons that retraced the steps of the pioneers. He was active in the V.F.W. and served as commander of district 7. Phill enjoyed gold mining and travel after his retirement.

Phill is survived by sister, Del Christianson; daughter, Diane (Art) Yarrish; son, Scott (Cathy) Holt; grandchildren, Todd (Estelle) Loye, Travis (Jennifer) Holt, and Justin Holt; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah and Benjamin Treadwell, and Carl Holt; and great-great-grandson, Jameson Treadwell. He was preceded in death by sister, Betty Orr Beale; first wife, Freddie Lee; and second wife, Margaret.

Phill's family wishes to express their gratitude to his care-giver, Debbie and Curt, for the loving care they provided.

Phill's remains will be escorted to the VA Cemetery by a motorcycle Honor Guard group, led by his son, Scott. As a World War II Veteran he will be honored at a service to be held at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

The family will host a celebration of his life in Eagle Point at Miguel's Mexican Restaurant after the service.
