Vern Collins, 91 of Phoenix, Ore. passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013 at his home. He was born to Robert and Rena (Meyer) Collins in Fowler, Colo. on August 9, 1922.
Vern moved to the Rogue Valley from Colorado in 1945 after serving in WWII in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed golf and softball. During the 1948-1974 softball seasons, he held the record of 700-85 with 30 no hitters. He is in the Softball Hall of Fame for the 103 MPH pitch.
He is survived by his daughters, Candace Collins of Phoenix, Ore and Patricia Collins-Pierson of Medford, Ore; a son, Tim Collins of Boise, ID; a brother, Walter "Cork" Collins of Brookings, Ore and a sister, Ila Fels of Brookings, Ore; stepdaughters, Shelley Buhrman of Central Point, Ore and Jeannie Mielke of Ft. Jones, Cal. and Three Grandchildren and One Great-Grandchild.
Vern was preceded by his first wife, Georgie (Hemple) Collins and his second wife, Virginia A (Brown) Collins.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, 1395 Arnold Lane, Medford, Ore. Please make memorial contributions to the Humane Society or the American Lung Association.
