Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Violet Ashton, 88, of Medford, OR, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at her home. "Vi" was born in Dolcey, Alberta, Canada, daughter of Mary Wilhemina Cook and father, William Thomas Rose, on August 14, 1919, the third of six children. The family moved to the San Francisco/Oakland Bay area by way of Sand Point, Idaho. In California, she met and married Ben Ashton of Greenfield, OK, on October 12, 1940. They moved their growing family to Medford in 1947. Vi was a short-order cook and waitress for the Bateman's and Olympic cafes, as well as being a hat check girl at the Dreamland Ballroom. Ben passed away in 1985 and Vi continued to work and retire from the SOS Packing House in Medford. Always an adventuresseven with six kidsshe took private flying lessons, loved hunting, camping and fishing, and delighted over her grandchildren and great-children. She also traveled as far east as New York City and south to Australia. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Larry Rose and sisters Fern Mathews and Billie Powers-Rose. She is survived by her sister, Boots Cook of Carlsbad, CA, and her children, Arthur (Scotty) Scott of San Diego, CA, Harold (Jerry) Ashton of New York City, NY, Robert Ashton of Gold Hill, OR, Thomas Ashton of Talent, OR, and Annie King, Nancy Kimble and Linda Ashton, all of Medford. She was grandmother to fourteen and great-grandmother to nine children. Services will be held on Monday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Chapel on Arnold Lane, Medford.
